Cabin heating in vehicles with internal combustion engines is simple because the engine generates lots of waste heat. Using the battery for heating lowers the range. The early Nissan Leafs pre used resistive heating. Resistive heating is probably the most inefficient way to heat the cabin. In the Leaf incorporated a heat pump and this mitigated the effect on range in cold weather. Gen 2 Volt also retains just pure resistive heating in EV mode.
Tesla has a patent on just such a system. The schematic from the patent describing the system is shown below. Tesla patent shows waste heat from the drive motor and electronics being used to heat the cabin. The patent shows 4 separate cooling loops. The top cooling loop is a glycol loop that cools the drive motor and electronics.

This glycol loop can cool the car via the refrigerant loop shown below the cabin loop or in heating mode the cabin loop uses a resistive element for heating. With the 2 loops connected, waste heat from the motor and electronics can be used to heat the cabin with the resistive heating element used as a second source of heat. The Model S cabin heater has two hidden modes. If the drive train is cold, all heat comes via resistive heaters, which can draw up to about 6 kW. That's a lot of power.
As you drive the car, the drive train will naturally heat up. Once that happens, Model S uses the drive train coolant to help heat the cabin. Essentially it takes waste heat from the motor and inverter and uses that to heat the cabin. This makes a huge difference to the power consumption - a fully warmed-up car will only need kW to keep the cabin warm even in extreme cold conditions. In comparison, the original Tesla Roadster needs 4 kW to keep its tiny cabin not-terribly-warm using only resistive heaters.
This is a big advantage of Model S engineering that Tesla never talks about! The upshot here is that cabin heater power consumption gets better quite dramatically after you've been driving for a while. As we previously reported, Sandy Munro, a manufacturing expert who rose to fame in the Tesla community after his breakdown of an early Model 3, is doing the first teardown of a Model Y. Now the manufacturing expert is getting into the nitty-gritty and showing some of the most impressive improvements made to the Model Y compared to the Model 3.
In the latest videos, we can see that they have removed most panels and the interior of the car -revealing the body, powertrain, and wiring architecture of the Model Y. It enables Tesla to make some significant cost savings by producing those parts in higher volumes, but it also limits the manufacturing improvements that the automaker can make to the electric SUV since it needs to rely on the design of the Model 3 for most of the parts.
Now that the interior has been stripped, Munro was able to get a good look at the floorpan and more wiring, which is very similar to the Model 3, but Tesla managed to make some improvements:. For example, Tesla managed to use the Model 3 floorpan in the SUV by raising the floor with engineered polypropylene EPPwhich resulted in reusing other interior parts for the Model 3, like the seats and entire dashboard, just at a different height.
The raised floor is allowing Tesla to have a better wiring architecture and fit some more parts underneath:. One of the most significant improvements that Munro noted is that Tesla changed the long high-voltage wiring system that goes from the inverter to the charge port to pipes Model Y pipes on the left and Model 3 wires on the right :.
Munro says that the main advantage is that the pipes will always fit perfectly during the assembly process and therefore, it should save time during manufacturing.
In another video, Munro deep dove into the rear casting of the Model Y, which is by far the most significant change to the body of the Model Y compared to the Model As we previously reported, CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla is moving to an aluminum casting design instead of a series of stamped steel and aluminum pieces for the Model Y body:.
Munro confirmed the change though he actually sees to parts in the back linked together by a bracket:. Nonetheless, he was really impressed by the improvement made to the rear casting and he especially loves the one-piece drop-in trunk. While it would be a significant capital expenditure, due to the kind of volume Model 3 is making, it could be worth it if the cost savings per car is big enough.

It begins charging at the full rate nearly immediately, and there's little sound. Have you experienced this with the Model Y, the Model 3, or any Tesla for that matter? A few YouTube commenters say they've experienced the same issue with the Y.
It's coming from the front end of the car, so it's likely the sound of the heat pump. The Model Y is the only Tesla with a heat pumpso this makes sense. In terms of the slow charging rate ramp up, one person says he was told on Tesla forums that it's normal due to the cold temps, which is correct. However, wouldn't the Model 3 do the same thing then? Perhaps this has something to do with heat pump as well? Halbert admits that the issue is definitely more present when it's cold.
Halbert is taking his Model Y in for service soon since his hatch only closes half the time when he uses the auto-close feature.
He's hoping he can get an explanation of the situation from Tesla service. In the meantime, what do you think?

Additionally, Munro stated in his recent teardown video that the new heat pump from Tesla can accomplish both air conditioning and heating.
This is the way to do it. The vehicle then makes a decision based on the climate control settings in the car. It will either go into an air conditioning condenser if the driver wants cold air, or straight into the cabin if the heat is turned on.
While this seems improbable, a heat pump can generate 3kW of thermal energy from 1 kW of power. This helps address the usual reduction of range experienced by Teslas in cold climates. The new system could eliminate the worries of consumers who live in areas where extremely cold weather is anticipated during winter months. Cold air increases drag, and while the battery and cabin require warming, range drops, causing more frequent charging stops.
But with a more efficient climate control system, this does not have to be the case. As for Munro, he believes that a heat pump was indeed the right choice for the Model Y.
